The October 2026 PHP warning, in plain English

On October 21, 2026, the FBI and NSA warned about two critical flaws in PHP, the code that WordPress and most small business websites run on. Attack code is already public.

WordPress itself didn't cause this, but every WordPress site is at risk until the server underneath it is updated. Sites on PHP 8.1 or older get no fix at all, and upgrading them often breaks old themes and plugins.

Most good hosts are patching now. Older sites on cheap hosting, or sites nobody has touched in years, are the ones at real risk.

Is my site at risk?

  • ✓Your site runs on WordPress.
  • ✓You're not sure who updates it, or when it was last updated.
  • ✓The person who built it doesn't answer anymore.

If any of these sound familiar, send me your website. I'll tell you where you stand, and if you're fine, I'll say so.

Three rescues, three results

Two businesses moved off WordPress, and a third launched on what the second left behind. None of them threw away what Google already knew.

Farm attraction · Medina

Majestic Meadows Alpacas

10×

search reach from new visitors, and holding

A page-builder WordPress site with 14 plugins logged 318,042 PHP warnings in its last 17 days. After the move, searches from people who didn't know the farm's name went from about 1,700 impressions a day to about 17,300.

Insurance agency · Retiring

A decade of content, kept working

61

dead links turned into permanent redirects

The agency was retiring, but Google still knew its articles. I rebuilt the 27 pages worth keeping as a lightweight archive at their original addresses (3.5 GB down to 0.56 MB), hosted by us. Every recovered link now lands on the successor's site.

Insurance agency · Canton

BE Frank Agency’s brand-new site

#1

on Google for “turning 65 canton ohio”

A new domain with no history, launched on our platform instead of WordPress. After about 2 months of SEO work, 4 of 7 tracked searches are on Google's first page, including #3 for “medicare part d canton oh.”

How I move a site off WordPress

  1. 01

    Inventory first

Every page Google has seen, including old ones from web archives. Nothing that still earns visitors gets lost.

  2. 02

    Rebuild on our platform

Fast pages built ahead of time, with no plugins. Forms, email, and analytics come built in, not bolted on.

  3. 03

    Redirect what broke

Every dead address goes to its closest matching page, never just the home page. Each one is tested live.

  4. 04

    Then grow it

Search markup so Google reads your business correctly, one page per search, and rankings tracked every day.

Why the new sites win

Nothing to patch

No plugins, and no PHP for attackers to exploit.

Fast

Pages are built ahead of time and served instantly.

Yours

You own your website and all of your data.

WordPress rescue questions

Will I lose my Google rankings if I move off WordPress?

Not if the move is done right. Before anything changes, I inventory every page Google already knows, keep what's working, and redirect what's broken to its closest match. When Majestic Meadows Alpacas moved off WordPress, searches from new visitors grew 10× and held.

Is WordPress the problem, or PHP?

The October flaw is in PHP, the code WordPress runs on. WordPress didn't cause it, but every WordPress site is exposed until the server underneath it is updated. That's the deeper problem: your site's safety depends on layers you don't control.

My host says it patched. Am I safe?

Probably, for this flaw, and that's good news. A rescue is about never needing an emergency patch again. The sites I build have no plugins and no PHP for attackers to exploit.

How long does a WordPress rescue take?

It depends on what your business needs. A simple site can be up within days, but custom features and protecting your search rankings take longer. A free consultation gets you a real answer for your site.

Do I own my new site?

Yes. You own your website and all of your data. I host and operate the platform it runs on.

What does a WordPress rescue cost?

Every business is different, so pricing is a conversation, not a menu. Contact me for pricing, and the first consultation is free.
